Sopore, Oct 11 (KNO): Residents of Astan Mohalla Warpora in north Kashmir’s Sopore have expressed frustration saying they continue to face a severe drinking water shortage for several months.
Many residents from the area called the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) and voiced their distress, accusing the Jal Shakti Department of providing inadequate supplies and failing to address their concerns.
The callers said they have been grappling with a significant shortage of drinking water for the past six months.
Despite our persistent appeals, the concerned department has not taken substantial steps to alleviate our plight, they said, adding that the scarcity has compelled them to fetch and drink water from potentially contaminated sources, which poses serious health risks.
One of the callers, Mudasir Ahmad, lamented the lack of response from the authorities despite their repeated pleas. He said the people of Astan Mohalla are in a “dire situation” due to the “negligent approach” of the department.
“Despite our continuous efforts to engage with the department, our appeals have fallen on deaf ears. This lack of responsiveness has further exacerbated our difficulties, leaving us feeling disregarded and frustrated,” Ahmad said.
The residents have made an urgent appeal to the higher authorities to restore regular water supplies to their area before winter.
The water shortage has not only affected household needs but also impacted kitchen gardens, said another caller.
When contacted, an official from the Jal Shakti Department told KNO that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
He said the welfare of the residents would not be compromised, and steps would be taken to resolve the crisis promptly—(KNO)
